AN URGENT WAR LOAN

(to the Editor.) Sir, —All inhabitants of New Zealand should desire that the New Zealand Government war loans of £10,000,000 should be fully or oversubscribed. Subscriptions may be made to either one of the two loans, viz.: A five-year loan bearing interest at 1\ per cent, per annum, or a 13- J year loan bearing interest at 3 per j cent, per annum. I have on one or two occasions heard people say: "How do we know that the money raised will not be applied to other purposes?" Such a remark is foolish and unfair. The people's safeguard is the Auditor-General, who would not permit moneys raised for specific purposes, especially War Loans, to be applied to other uses. The terms of the loans are very fair, and should appeal to every loyal- citizen who has any money to invest. The money is urgently needed and must be raised, and no call for money can have a greater appeal. If we lose this war then all our investments, properties, or money will be worth no more than the proverbial "tin of fish." If we win, then the money is safe, and our subscriptions to these loans will be repaid on due date. It is our absolute and undeniable duty to assure that the loan is a success. If it is not, then the Government will have no other course 'to adopt than ,to levy another compulsory loan, whether we like it or not. I personally am not a. member of the Labour Party, in fact, would not be sorry to see a change of Government, but in the matter of financing our war effort there should b«» neither party nor creed, but one united \ people. Our slogan is:—"We fight not! for glory, neither for honour nor for wealth, but for that freedom which no good m.an will surrender but with his life." Our sons are fighting—we must find the money. —I am, etc., "V."
