MR. H.W.JOHNSON

The death occurred in Wellington this week of Mr. H. W. Johnson, of Karori.

■ Prior to the Great War Mr. Johnson was employed as works manager by Messrs. A. and T. Burt, Ltd. During that war he served at Medical Headquarters of the Defence Department as a commissioned officer, and dealt with matters pertaining to hygiene and building construction in the military camps. Early in 1920 he joined the Health Department as technical inspector, and since that time had had a great deal to do with hospital boards throughout the Dominion, particularly in connection with their engineering services. In this capacity he proved a most competent authority. Owing to his genial personality he was popular both in the Department and with the various hospital boards. He was secretary and treasurer of the Board of Examiners of the Royal Sanitary Institute for seventeen years, and chairman of the Plumbers Board of New Zealand since 1920.

For about 20 years he was a member of the teaching staff of the Wellington Technical College, taking classes in plumbing. There his influence' extended throughout the school, not only in his own class, but to all members of the staff and all those who were taking instruction in plumbing or in sanitary science. He was a past president of the Karon Bowling Club and was interested in the Masonic Order, being a foundation member and Past Master of Lodge Karori. He was also actively associated with the Vivian Street Baptist Church for 35 years. At the church yesterday morning a large gathering paid respect to his memory. Mr. Johnson is survived "by his wife, a son, Mr. Colin Johnson (Rotorua), and a daughter, Miss Barbara Johnson (Karori).

Sir Harry Batterbee, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, left Wellington today for Auckland. He expects to return to Wellington on Sat urday morning.
