POWER SUPPLY

AFFECTED BY FROSTS

MARLBOROUGH DISTRICT

*0.C.)

BLENHEIM, This Day,

Exceptionally heavy frosts have been (Experienced in MarlboroughT over a prolonged spell, and in Blenheim there" have been consistent recordings ranging from 14 to 17 degrees. One serious [result is. the 'possible interruption of (the power supply.

Frosts up to 21 degrees have been experienced at the headworks; and the of the Waihopai River pas fallen to 28 degrees, with the result that still, quiet parts of the river are frozen over. For long periods the headworks cannot operate at all, and jfor other periods the flow is sufficient to generate only 350 k.w., the load being borne by a standUy plant and engines at the Woodbourne Flying Training School. On the last four nights the headworks have cut-out at 5 a.m. end yesterday morning the cut-out was &t 1.30. It is necessary for the standby plant and the Woodbourne engines to operate to their full capacity ,|o carry'the load, but the Woodbourne plant generates only 300 k.w. It is Usually about 10 a.m. befoi'e the head•works are operating again, but even then at a very reduced capacity.

The situation obviously is a disturbing one, as it only needs a fault to develop at the standby plant and the power supply will be seriously affected.
