"DOING THEIR BIT"
HARD OF HEARING
GLAD OF OPPORTUNITY
"Many of our members have been glad, during this period of war, to avail themselves of.the opportunity of 'doing their bit,' and have spent much time knitting and sewing," stated Miss Maisie Eggleton, organising teacher of lip-reading, in her report at the annual meeting of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing. "As a result we have handed over to the Patriotic Society 20 balaclavas and 20 scarves, 291 vests; and 64 food covers (for use in Egypt)., and 65 tray cloths and 40 hold-alls to the Red Cross for use on the hospital ship. Six hundred, and seventy 'ditty bags' were made for general distribution, and 75 new and used articles of clothing have been given for refugee relief. A collection has also been made of tins suitable for filling with foot-dusting powder, and used Christmas cards to be renovated for further
use. "For buying materials for such work funds to the extent of approximately £26 have been raised by means of 'bring and buy' afternoons. Flowers, i mainly contributed by Miss Atack, have been on sale amongst the students, enabling us to make donations to the Fighter PJane Fund, London Relief Fund, and at present we are working on a fund to be sent overseas to leagues for the hard of hearing whose libraries have been destroyed by air raids. Miss Atack, has been appointed chief monitor in our patriotic work, and her ever-ready services are sincerely appreciated."
