GREEK HERO-WORSHIP
BRITISH PRISONERS
GERMANS INFURIATED
(Rec. 2.30 p.m.)
LONDON, July 2,
"The Istanbul correspondent of "The Times" says that the Germans, in an attempt to humiliate BritishT>risoners in Greece, forced them to clean the streets of Athens, with 'the unexpected result that the prisoners became the centre \of popular demonstrations of hero-worship. Greeks surrounded them and threw them sweets, bread, and flowers.
Infuriated, the Germans placed two armed soldiers near every streetcleaner and threatened to shoot if the crowds showed the slightest sign of interest in the prisoners.
