BETTER THAN MEN

GIRL WORKERS

MUNITIONS OUTPUT

SERVICE APPEALS

The work being done by girls on munitions contracts was most satisfactory, Mr. Carl Pallo, managing director of Pallo Engineering, Ltd., told the Armed Forces Appeal Board today when he appealed for exemption from military duties for two of his key men. Mr. Pallo said that he had employed from 90 to 100 hands before the war but only had 70, including 14 girls, at present. Only 10 of the 70 were engaged on purely civilian' work, the others being on munitions or work for the Public Works Department. About 15 former, members of the staff were on service overseas, and he intended to build up the staff by em-

ploying more girls. If girls could be engaged on shift work there would not be much staff difficulty, Mr. Pallo said. He had instituted.a chain system. The output by giris was greater than that of the men because the girls, unlike the men. did not tire when the work was monotonous.. "The men's output is substantially lower .than that of the girls on this, .work," he said. The chairman of the board. (Mr. W. F. Stilwell,. S.M.): What do you. put that down to?

Mr. Pallo: Girls can talk and still carry on with their work. Then there is the monotony. Men get tired of it. A girl's hands work apart from her mind, but a man's hands and mind work together.

The appeals for the two men, Roy Albert Viles, senior turner, and Richard Regan Leight, senior die and tool, maker, were adjourned sine die, the men being directed to. enrol in the Emergency Fire Scheme within fourteen days.

. Other appeals heard by the board on the grounds of public interest or hardship were made by Clarence Sievers. a farmer,, adjourned sine die; William John Edward Howat, a waterside worker, dismissed; Robert Angus Smith, a boilermabker, dismissed .for •want of appearance; and the Wellington Slipper Company, Ltd., on behalf of Clarence Ernest Looner, a clicker, dismissed, Looner not to be called for service before November 21.
