ASKED TO LEAVE
BRITISH CONSUL IN SYRIA
LONDON, May 20,
It was learned in London' tonight that the Vichy Government has requested all the remaining British Consular officials in Syria to leave within eight days. A communique issued by M. Dentz, the Syrian High Commissioner, stated that the British ConsulGeneral at Beirut has been asked to leave in consequence of the British request for the withdrawal of the French Consul-General in London.
A message from Vichy states that the French Air Minister is inspecting the Syrian defences against air attacks, but the independent French agency attributes his arrival to a desire to counteract a movement among military elements in Syria against Vichy's concessions to Germany, which are held to be excessive.
The agency states that Vichy fears the possibility of a reaction in Syria in favour of General de Gaulle.
