MIDHIRST BORE
GETTING WELL DOWN
(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, May 20,
Satisfaction with the progress made in oil-drilling operations at Midhirst was expressed by the Minister oi Mines (Mr. Webb) when he visited the bore with Mr. W. Holmes, past presi dent of the Trades Union Congress of Great Britain.
"The plant is operating in a hard stratum of grey shale that restricts boring to about one foot an hour, but has reached a depth of 6815 feet, and should not be long in tapping gravel that may or may not contain oil." His own optimism had never been shaken. The Government was pleased at the serious and painstaking effort that was being made by the company.
