GOOD USE OF BOOKS
WAR LIBRARY SERVICE
"The hospital staff and ship's crew of *o. 1 Hospital Ship Maunganui are making good, use of the books: provided by the War Library, Service and 'a.-".'much greater demand is expected when the sick and wounded are aboard," wrote the chaplain and librarian (the Rev. H. K. Vickery) in a letter to the Minister of Education (Mr. Mason).
Mr. Vickery expressed appreciation ot the work of the director of the Country Library Service, Mr. G. T, Alley, and his staff in selecting and cataloguing the books and devising a system of distribution. In giving this information to a "Post" reporter, Mr. Mason mentioned th: approximately 1000 books and 1500 pei-iodicals had been supplied to the ship through the co-operative effort of the people of the Dominion, working through the NeW Zealand Library Association and the Patriotic Fund Board, This was the first extension to a hospital ship of the War Library Service which, since the outbreak of war, had made available over 200,000 books and periodicals to the New Zealand fighting services.
