FLOOD DAMAGE
MANAWATU AREA
HELP FOR FARMERS
Flood damage in the Manawatu area was discussed today with the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) and the Minister of Public Works (Mr. Armstrong) by members of the Manawatu-Oroua Rivers Board. The deputation was accompanied by the Hon. J. Cobbe (Manawatu) and Mi. T. H. Lowry (Otaki), who gave details of the losses of many settlers. It was stated by the deputation that although the recent flooding was exceptionally high, a fortunate condition of the weather enabled the water to get j away more rapidly than usual. However, the damage to stop-banks would require an expenditure of about £3000 for repairs. Mr. Nash assured the deputation that when the individual applications of farmers in respect to losses were received, the matter would be • immediately dealt with by Treasury and other officers, who would recommend grants. The Government was prepared to subsidise repair work connected with the river on the basis of a £ for £ subsidy. The major scheme for flood prevention in the whole area was under consideration in relation to the general inquiry now taking place regarding river erosion throughout the Dominion.
