MAN IN UNIFORM

THE MAXIMUM PENALTY

(P.A.) PALMERSTON N.. This Day. Two charges of unlawfully wearing military uniform were preferred at Feilding today against Murray Beresford Roberts (21), single, formerly housemaster at the Feilding Agricultural High School. The accused pleaded guilty. <; The police stated that records showed that when the American Clipper visited New Zealand on one occasion the accused represented himself as a member of the crew. On another occasion he led people to believe that he was a member of some secret service and investigating the movements of a German. In January last he purchased a military uniform and led people to believe that he was an officer. Counsel said that the accused, who was of a nervous disposition, never sought to . impose on the military authorities. He had only anticipated securing a commission. The Magistrate, in fining the accused £5 on each charge, said that this was the maximum provided in the Act, which he thought in wartime was not adequate or commensurate with the seriousness, of the offence.
