WAR WEAPONS WEEK

RESPONSE IN LONDON

LONDON, May 20. London's war weapons week, by which it is hoped to raise £100,000,000, is now in full swing. The president of the National Savings. Committee said that reports from aU quarters made him feel optimistic. The Lord Mayor opened a savings centre at the Mansion House by reading a message from the King, in which his Majesty said that he was sure that the response would be worthy of the highest traditions of the city, Messages were read from other Londons—London in Ontario, East London in South Africa, Little London in •Hampshire, and London in Hertfordshire. Afterwards city workers filed through the savings centre while the Band of the Irish Guards played music. Sir Walter Kirk said in the city today: "This city has been bombed • and blasted, but its citizens are not dismayed. I doubt if the citizens of Berlin can say the same thing. One of the gang has already had enough." Contributions poured in from all quarters. They ranged from a cheque for £5,000,000 from an assurance company to a guinea from a proud and homesick Londoner in the country. There are promises of £4,000,000 from commercial and financial houses in the city, and £750,000 frorri a large industrial combine.
