OTAKI CONCLUDES

GOOD OFF-DAY ATTENDANCE

For a Monday there was a surprisingly good attendance on the concluding day of the Otaki Maori Racing Club's Winter Meeting yesterday, better than the officials generally anticipated. It was a pleasant day, mainly sunshine chilled by a fresh wind from the sea. The investments, of course, did not approach a Saturday's figures, but the £ 12,064£ handled was a very satisfactory return for an unusual racing day at this end of the North Island. There was no corresponding day last year. For the two days the total was £30,131 10s. The course was in splendid order, and the sport was always most enjoyable, with form for the main part reliable. ■ The bulk of the betting in every race was done on the win machine. WHEN STAMINA COUNTS. The Monarch's stamina assisted him to a comfortable win in the Ta Timi Kara Handicap. He was a better horse for the race on Saturday, but the difficult style of running also played into his favour. The pace was kept on by Valerian and Trench Law, which forced The Monarch to drop back to the rear, but as the leaders tired nearingthe straight The Monarch moved up and finally readily wore down Beau Ciel to score going away by a couple of lengths. This three-year-old Croupier colt promises to reach the top grade this season. He seems at home in any conditions. Beau Ciel was doing it easily behind the leaders to the straight, but, after taking charge, his tenacity was no match for his victor's stamina. Night Eruption came on to cut Trench Law out of third. Mittie was a possibility till the straight. Valerian faded completely. The two favourites, Noble Fox and Surveyor-General, ran a popular dead heat in the Taipua Handicap. Noble Fox dashed round fast on the turn to. assume charge in the straight, but Sur-veyor-General, who had been waiting on the fence, then came out with a powerful challenge, and the pair finished stride for stride. Some thought the challenger might have got there, but the verdict was cheered. Endorsement tired into a poor third, clear of Lady Montana. Miss Te Koura, who made the .early running, shut right up. TWELVE MONTHS LATER. Game Pit, who won the1 Rangiuru Hack and Hunters' Steeplechase practically all the way, was repeating his success in .the same event twelve months ago. It was his first outing this season. Glenvane outstayed Puffing Billy for second. Puffing Billy, a Tractor six-year-old, went surprisingly well for a first appearance, and briefly along the back the last time he headed off Game Pit. He is owned by Mrs. T C. Lowry, wife of the .famous cricketer. Sunee was a poor fourth. Colibri and Luath both lost their rider and Padnos refused when already right out of the contest. The Wanton, the unlucky runner on | the first day, made' amends in the Waikariae Hack Scurry by beginning mucn better and then wearing down the pacemakers, Royal Vision and Sandy Bay. She is the second of the Midians to win out of this Weathervane stallion's first small crop of yearlings and she promises to develop into a very useful sort. Sandy Bay outstayed Royal Vision, on whose outer he had run to the' straight. Lucky Lulu, a hot favourite, was twice disappointed when going for an opening. The others, headed by Ata Puwhero and Eastern Sport, were well back. An unusual feature of the betting in this race was that Vaalslea carried no investment whatever on the win machine, though she was entrusted with £8 10s on the place machine. IMPROVED BY RACE. Improved by her race among the maidens on Saturday, her first this season, Kinkajou came round to jom Sceptre and Caution in the van entering the straight in the Pukehou Hack Handicap and then went on to win very easily. She is a four-year-old half-sister by Kincardine to Queen's Diadem and Queen's Pride and she carries the colours of her: breeder, Mr. C. Haldane, of Hastings. Sceptre had every chance out in front with Caution, the latter just hanging on long enough to stall off Regicide, who, with Moderate, was slow off the mark. La Rosita again faded before the busiIn completing a double at the meeting with another stylish win in the Ohau Handicap, in which she always appeared to hold the master hand over her rivals, the thrae-year-old Tiderace* filly Talenta emerged from hack ranks, though she still has her nominations to run out. She was again splendidly handled by the stable apprentice, J. Hastie, a boy who looks to hold a future. Katesbridge, unable to go with her field to the turn, finished fast out pn the course to cut Titter, who had come by the rail, out of third. Myarion and Hokumai had every chance. . , Star Zone, a hot favourite, repeated her first day's success in the Tainui Hack Handicap, but she did it differ--1 ently by going to the front inside the first furlong. At the distance she looked an easy winner,, but her rider took things a bit quietly and War Credit ran her to a neck. This Thoraond mare is in good fettle at present, ; and she looks solid enough to go on to further successes. First Round was 'oest of a poor remainder. Ringling . v -as a failure. .
