CROQUET PLAYERS

WAR WORK ACCOMPLISHED

Some 500-odd members, with Mrs. W S. Austin as president, comprise the Wellington Croquet Association, which is one of the most enthusiastic bodies working for patriotic purposes. At a recent function held in St. John's Church Schoolroom it was disclosed that already the sum of £107 had been collected for the war effort, arid that £85 had.this year been subscribed to the Y.W.C.A. for free teas for soldiers of all ranks on leave in the city. Besides these amounts £27 was handed in for the Spitfire fund. In response to a recent appeal to the association for additional parcels to complete the quota for soldiers overseas, over Jl .£2o was handed in by the various clubs, and goods purchased, packed, and forwarded to headquarters, all within a short space of time. The members of the various clubs set aside one day each week for meeting in the club pavilion where sewing machines and cutting out tables and ironing conveniences have been installed, and as a result hundreds of woollen and suitable garments have been forwarded to headquarters for dispatch overseas, as well as supplies! for the hospital ship. It is worthy of mention that the Wellington Croquet Association represents only a portion of the many hundreds of croquet players who are doing similar war work throughout the Dominion. i
