PRISONERS SENTENCED

George Ahitahi Duncan, a farm labourer, aged 21, who had pleaded guilty to three charges of breaking and entering and theft at Gisborne on April 30. was -sentenced to two years' reformative detention by the Chief Justice (Sir Michael Myers) in the Supreme Court today. His Honour said Duncan's record was a bad one, and included a number of charges of theft. John Rumble, a farm labourer, aged 19 (Mr. G. C. Kent), who appeared with Duncan on the same charges, was sent to a Borstal institution for two years. Edward Crampton, a labourer, aged 20 (Mr. A. B. Sievwright), who had pleaded guilty at Wellington on May 14 to a charge of breaking and entering and theft, was admitted to probation for two years, ordered to pay the* costs of the prosecution, and to make restitution, by instalments, of £20 10s 9d, the value of three unrecovered watches and a chain, and the cost of a broken window. His Honour said that but for the probation officer's recommendation he would have been disposed to send the prisoner to Borstal for two years. Mr. W. R. Birks appeared for the Crown.
