NEW CROAT STATE

CREATED BY AXIS

DUKE OF SPOLETO AS KING

ITALIAN GAINS

LONDON, May 19,

The Axis Powers had a busy day in Rome today parcelling out the Adriatic port, under a 25-year frontier agreement signed today by the Italian Government , and the Government, of Croatia's quislings. Under this agreement Italy takes the port of Susak, near Fiume. and a certain part of the hinterland. Italy also takes the Split area, and all but three of the Yugoslav islands off the Dalmatian coast. Croatia binds herself not to establish any naval, military, or air base opposite Italy in the Adriatic and undertakes not to join an international pact without Italy's consent. The King of Italy has announced that he has appointed his nephew, the Duke of Spoleto, King of Croatia. The Duke is 41, and the younger brother of the Duke of Aosta.

In a ceremony in Rome today, the Croatian terrorist, Pavelitch, formally offered the Crown to King Victor Emmsnuei. Pavelitch is the man who engineered the assassination of King Alexander of Yugoslavia, at Marseilles, in 1934, and is under a death sentence in France. The streets of Rome were decorated with the Italian and Croatian colours, and the Rome radio broadcast a running commentary on the arrival of the Croatian delegation. The man who helped to murder his King was put at the head of a ceremonial procession and given the use of a luxurious villa reserved for Italy's'

most honoured guests. This contrasts sharply with his visit in 1936 when he was thrown into prison -at Turin.

Behind all this pomp and ceremony is a systematic Axis plan for looting Croatia. The Reich Minister, Dr. Clodius, has gone to the country to establish "commercial relations" between Germany arid the new State, and a permanent frontier commission has been set up at Vienna. Meanwhile feverish work is being carried out on new national legislation in Croatia. Lock-outs and strikes have been prohibited, and production will be entirely State controlled.
