CHASE BY POLICE

CAR OVERTURNS

YOUNG MAN'S OFFENCE

A chase by police which had its climax in a converted car overturning at Lyall Bay was described in the Magistrate's Court today, when Porcival Roy Ryder, a storeman, aged 18. appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout. S.M., and pleaded guilty to a charge of unlawful conversion.

Sub-Inspector L, Capp, who prosecuted, said a car nad been reported missing, and a police car which went out met it in Queen's Drive,'Lyal] Bay. The police gave chase, and the driver apparently suspected that he was being pursued, because he tried to give the police the slip by turning into side streets.

"He was travelling at high speed,", said Sub-Inspector Capp, "and when taking a sharp bend the vehicle capsized. Luckily he was not hurt." Ryder, he said, admitted that he left home at 6.55 p.m., telling his mother he was going to see a friend. Instead, he went for a walk, and seeing the parked car he converted it to his own use. He had previously been convicted of a similar offence.

Mr. F. W. Ongley, who appeared for Ryder, said that the boy had been spending his time in abstract discussion of religious principles when he should have been out playing football or something similar. He was a useful worker and a decent-living boy.

The Magistrate, who convicted Ryder and ordered him tOj be detained in a Borstal institution'for 12 months.'said that he had already been given a chance and had not taken advantage of it.
