SCHOOL FOR APPRENTICES

"Seeing that the school of instruction for apprentice jockeys has proved such a success at Hastings and Awapuni, I consider the time opportune for the extension of the scheme to Auckland and other parts of the province," said Dr. E. W. B. Milsom, president of the New Zealand Racing Owners', Breeders', and Trainers' Association, when presiding over a recent meeting of the Auckland branch.

Reports were received showing the benefits derived by a large number of apprentices through the instruction given by Mr. L. G. Morris and the late Mr. S. J. Reid. In addition to track and race riding the boys were instructed in all phases of the sport, including Rules of Racing. It was decided to form a committee of trainers to go thoroughly into the question of establishing a school, the following being appointed:—Messrs. J. M. Buchanan, R. S. Bagby (Ellerslie), F. Smith, H. E. Gray (Takanini), S. G. Lindsay, and H. Goldfinch (Avondale).
