it • . c In accordance with the announcet ment made by the Prime Minister y (Mr. Fraser) last Saturday, privated ly-owned .303 rifles or parts of d .303 rifles are to be handed in to y ' the nearest police station by May i 15 next on loan to the Government «, for home defence purposes. ? It is understood that registered 3 owners of these rifles will receive ins dividual notices early next week, but b the Prime: Minister-.in his statement & made it quite clear that failure to rey .eeive a notice, does not exonerate a 1 person from the necessity for handing >, in his rifle. It has also been clearly indicated that all .303 rifles must be handed in whether they are registered or un- : registered, whether they are service--1 able or unserviceable, and whether . they are owned by the holder or mere- ; ly held on behalf of some other per- \ son. >.■.., * LEAVE TO RETAIN RIFLES. t Any person may be granted leave to r retain his rifle if it can be shown to the Minister's satisfaction that it is » urgently required. Arrangements have I been made for field officers either of I the Lands and Survey Department, the L Department oi Agriculture, the Native i Department, or the State Advances Der partment to investigate and report on > each application of this nature by farmers. 5 Rifles in the possession of active j members of the Home Guard will be E formally taken over, in accordance with 3 instructions issued to unit commanders, s but members may, if they so desire, ; be allowed to retain possession so long I as' they are taking an active part in . the movement. They mujst, however, notify the police that they are active members of the Home Guard and desire to have the exclusive use of their rifles. Further particulars are advertised.
