TESTING BITUMEN
Problems involved in the testing of bituminous highway materials were described in a paper given by the chairman of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry, Mr. J. B. Hyatt, at the first meeting of the year, held on Tuesday. The speaker emphasised the empirical nature of many of the tests and the consequent attention to detail required for a satisfactory analysis of such materials. However, the technical problems in designing suitable apparatus for tests, together with the conservatism of the bodies responsible for ,drawing up specifications, made rapid advancement in the field of the analyst difficult. Problems associated with the evaluation of bitumen mixtures, .the carrying out of accelerated road tests, and the analysis of actual road surface test piece's, were also discussed.
