DEMONSTRATIONS BANNED IN
EUROPE

(Red 1,1.10 a.m.) LONDON, May 1. May Day did not follow traditional lines, except in Russia. Demonstrations were banned in most European countries. A Greek Labour manifesto expressed the opinion ythat May • Day, 1942, will see the end of carnage and the triumph of the moral forces o| social justice. The Nazi Director *of Organisation; Dr. Ley, issued a proclamation stating that German workers were celebrat-, ing May Day as a day of work and national unity. Marshal Petain will address workers today at Montlucon. General de Gaulle, in a broadcast to France, said: "The French workers, by treating May 1 with dignified silence, will show their contempt of traitors and their hope of deliverance." _ The Burgomaster of Brussels has banned street demonstrations from Nfay 1 to May 10. Moscow had a labour procession and a military review. The Commissar of Defence, Marshal Timoshenko, in a speech, said that the Red Army was ready to offer an annihilating rebuff to any imperialistic encroachments. The Red Army must keep its powder dry, "so that no accident and no tricks by our enemies may catch us unawares." —U.P.A.
