COAL SUPPLIES
NO NEED FOR CONCERN
PUBLIC ASSURED
(P.A.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day For the first quarter of 1941 the Dominion's coal output showed an increase of 35 per cent, on the figures for the same period last year, said the Minister of Mines (Mr. Webb) today. The actual increase for the three months was 100,828 tons. For March the production of coal from the principal collieries in New Zealand was 45,712 tons higher than for March . last year.
As far as the railways were concerned, said the Minister, the stock position in the South Island was quite good, but in the North Island, although there was no need for concern, the position had to be watched very closely to ensure that an adequate reserve of coal was maintained. The household stock position also was satisfactory, and there was no need for the public to be apprehensive of rationing under present conditions. '
