IDLE COAL MINE

DEADLOCK REACHED

THE MACDONALD DISPUTE

UNION'S ATTITUDE

CP.A.)

HAMILTON, This Day,

The men at the Mac Donald coal mine are still idle, and as they are' not being supported in their dispute by the district council of the Northern Miners' Union, it appears that a deadlock has been reached. It is understood that the district council is not handling the matter in any way.

It has also been stated that since the men ceased work on Monday after 14 days' notice of their intention there have been no negotiations or discussions between representatives of the men and the owners. I! is thought, although no official statement to the effect has been given, that the men. are expecting some word from Wellington today with regard to the dispute. A conference of miners is being held in Wellington today, and although 4t 'was not called for the purpose of discussing the Mac Donald strike, it is hoped that the matter will be ventilated there. Aj mass meeting that was expected yesterday did not eventuate, and the miners had a very quiet day. It is hoped by the men to arrange a meeting fo" this weekend.

Today all other mines in the district resumed work after the May Day holiday.
