KIEL BOMBED
R.A.F. OVER GERMANY
STRONG FORCE
DAMAGE IN EMDEN
RUGBY, May 1
The Air Ministry communique dealing with last night's R.A.F. operations says that strong forces of bombers attacked objectives in Germany, the main attack being directed against the naval base at Kiel. Other objectives included targets in the Berlin area, the industrial centre of Hamburg, and the port of Emden. The weather over the Continent was found to be generally unfavourable. None of our aircraft is missing from these operations. Yesterday aircraft of the same command continued to attack and harass enemy shipping off the Dutch coast. Other aircraft successfully bombed a wireless station on an island off the Norwegian coast. One aircraft is missing from these daylight operations. Information reaching London reveals the great destruction caused by heavy British bombs in a recent raid on Emden. Complete confusion reigned in the town, and the German authorities were unable to follow their usual policy of shutting off damaged sections of the town from the public. One bomb which fell near the Emden post office did great damage. One wing of the post office was smashed, 70 houses were completely destroyed, and 200 houses were damaged by this one bomb.—B.O.W.
