TEPID BATHS

MR. MCKEEN'S SCHEME

The construction of modern tepid baths as a victory war memorial was advocated by Mr. R. McKeen, Labour candidate for the Mayoralty, when speaking at Karori last night. "We are about the only city in New Zealand that has not tepid baths," said Mr. McKeen, "and it is through lack of initiative on the part oi the Citizens' council that we are still without them. Mr. Hislop promised three years ago that a poll would be taken on the issue this election. Nothing has been done about it, though Citizens' candidates are running round saying that we should do something about it. But no one has put forward any practical scheme. "I do that now. My plan provides for an Olympic pool, with Turkish and slipper baths, and the estimated cost is between £70,000 and £80,000. There is no need to take a poll. Let us earmark a certain portion of the profits of the Electricity Department for three or four years as a contribution to the cost. The department's handsome balances have been raided before for general purposes, and they could finance the cost of the baths, without the ratepayers being called upon to provide an extra penny. Our electricity charges are among the lowest in the world, so let us now use the profits for this patriotic purpose. Private contributions could be made, and money spent in additional units such as slipper baths under the donor's name." ' .
