BITUMINOUS MATERIALS
At a meeting this week the chairman of the Wellington branch of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry, Mr. J. B. Hyatt, gave a paper on some of the methods employed in the testing of bituminous highway materials. He emphasised the empirical nature of many of the tests and the consequent attention to detail required for a satisfactory analysis of such materials. However, (he technical problems In designing suitable apparatus for tests such as penetration and viscosity, together with the conservatism of the bodies responsible for drawing up specifications, made rapid, advancement in the field of the analyst difficult. Problems associated with the evaluation of bitumen mixtures, the carrying but of accelerated road tests, and the analysis of actual road surface test pieces, were also' discussed. ' . .
