Several North Island horses are engaged to oppose the recent. form from the West Coast. There was a time when the Nelson Cup was one of the premier events in the Dominion, and though it has long since lost that glamour it is still a race that leading sportsmen are very keen to win. PALMERSTON N., This Day. A. M. Wright has transferred his j team from Woodville, and the appearance of his horses at Awapuni added quite ! a lot of interest to the track work yesterday morning. The horses are Chat, Raana, Haile Selassie, Game Pit, Hunter's Eve, and a Croupier—Rag Fair .four-year-old. Chat out in the centre, was given a solid test over the country. She jumped soundly, wasting little or no time over the fences, and she negotiated six brush fences, four post-and-rails, and two hen-coops. She never put a foot wrong, and there was plenty of pace on all the way. Raana (M. Wright) was schooled over six hurdles, but there was little pace on, and he jumped carefully. Bridegroom and High Peer galloped six furlongs on the plough, and Bridegroom was in front at the post in lmin 23Jsec. ; Aurora's Star was just in ' front of Selkirk at the end of a mile in lmin 49 4-ssec. ' On the course proper Newbury Queen was not under pressure in running five in lmin Bsec. Ringless was on the bit in a similar task which took lmin 10 3-ssec. Fly-by-Night scampered easily over three .in 39 4-ssec, and Rangitikei covered half a mile in 54sec. St. Felician showed pace in a three-furlong sprint, the last two taking 25 3-ssec. Taitama was in front of Squeers at the end of five furlongs in lmin 5 4-ssec. Courting registered lmin 6sec. Corroboree was schooled, as was Grateful, who was put over one of the brush fences on the steeplechase course. E. W. Watson has taken in hand a likely-looking youngster in a rising three-year-old filly by Inflation from Cloudy Bay. She was bred by Mr. W. Crystall and is to be called Thumbs Up. TROTS AT OAMARU The Oamaru Trotting Club's Winter Meeting, which will be held tomorrow, has attracted satisfactory fields, and some good racing should be provided.
