LIKELY IMPROVER
AGENT'S TWO EASY WINS
(By "Ariki Toa.")
The maiden pacing talent seen out at the Manawatu Meeting was of very poor quality, and Agent . stood head and shoulders above her opponents, so much so that on the second day she was equal to conceding 48yds and a three lengths' beating to the field for the Kairanga Handicap. Admittedly, she was beaten later in the day when stepped out among the improvers, but it is doubtful if she would lose any supporters from the effort. Agent, who is a seven-year-old mare by Nelson Derby from Mavis Wood, only commenced racing at the recent Hawera Meeting, and as she will continue to improve she should make her way to a much tighter mark. Broke Each Start.
There was confident support for First Call in both novice races on the second day at Awapuni but any chances he may have possessed were extinguished by his failure to strike a gait early in both contests. This gelding promised'to develop into a more than useful performer early in the season, but his recent efforts have been far from impressive,*and he will require to improve to regain the winning list.
A Quick Return,
Native Bird did not take long to repay Mr. G. Lancaster, of Wellington, some of the £200 he expended on her purchase in between the first and second days of the Manawatu Meeting, for she won the Louisson Handicap in her second start in new colours, the victory bringing in £85. This mare is a fairly solid sort who can be further improved, and in all probability she will go north to be trained at Takanini by F. J. Smith.
