WORKING MEN'S CLUB

The chess and draughts players of the Wellington Working Men's Club and Literary Institute held their fifty-second annual general meeting ou Friday evening. Fourteen members were present, and Mr. D. Rigby, the vicepresident, was in the chair. The annual report stated that the club's chess championship had been won by Mr. T, Lepviikmann. The second and third prizes were divided by Messrs. ,T. L, Hardy and H. M. Rosenberg, and Mr. W. McClure gained the fourth prize. By winning the major open tourney at the Timaru Chess Congress, Mr. Hardy has the right to compete in New Zealand's next championship tourney. The club's senior team won the Wellington Chess League's A grade teams tournament by half a point after an exciting finish with the Wellington Club's formidable "Red" team. The club also won the Hugh Wright Bowling Cup and the Mercantile Cricket Association's A grade championship. The deaths of Messrs. George Lindsay and Konui Andrews (or Annru) are placed on record. The report was adopted unanimously.

Nearly all last year's officers were re-elected. The new appointments are Messrs. McClure and D. Stephens to the match committee, and T. Ryan to the draughts committee.

It. is hoped to hold three shess tourneys at an early date, and also to revive the annual draughts tourney, which lapsed seven years ago. The meeting terminated with the presentation of pri7.es, and votes of thanks to Messrs. Righy. Kirkwood. Hard,., and Eton for donations, to the cluh's general committee for valued assistance, to the Press, and to last year's office-bearers.
