WANGANUI -MEETING

LEADING RIDERS IN FORM

With pleasant weather, the Wanganui Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting was most successfuly concluded on the Awapuni course on Saturday. There was a big attendance, mainly Manawatu patrons, and another substantial return in investments. The day's total was £28,046, as against £12,304 10s on Ihe club's own course last year, making a total of £45,873 10s for the meeting, compared with £22,851 10s twelve months ago, an increase of £23,022, over 100 per cent.

*The track showed little sign of the rain that followed the first day's racing and it was in excellent galloping

order,

W. J. Broughton and B, H. Morris were in top riding form, each riding three winners. .

MINORITY SHOWS QUALITY.

Minority was backed to good favouritism in the better class of the Earle Stakes, and he amply justified the faith reposed in him. Improving a couple of places along the outer m the middle stages,, he followed Notium, Gay Fox, and Rustem into the straight, •where he challenged determinedly and finally pulled back the pacemaker in the last fifty yards. A half-brother by Foxbridge to Majority, Minority has improved with his spell and is likely to develop high handicap form. Notium, who ran a useful race in the Wanganui Cup, made a bold effort to pull off one of his second-day surprises out in front and just failed. Gay Fox hung on for third, well clear of Little Robin, who ran below his best form. Belle Cane again failed to produce her old finishing ability, and Dynasty's form receded, as it has done before after a winning effort. Boldstep stumbled early and the only time he looked a possibility was along the back stretch.

With the scratching of Kinneff and Zest, the Campbell Handicap took on an easy appearance for Tuatara, who won well in the end at very short odds. Black Robe kept the favourite stretched till the distance, but from that point he held the ascendancy. Hui finished on for third, and Valiant Lady, last early, led the remainder. Despite the quality of the field the I pool was the biggest at the meeting. BEATEN BY SORENESS. Mataroa, a hot favourite, was too sore to do himself justice in the Fordell Hack Hurdles. He valiantly tried to' respond to hard riding, but after catching Manteau and Selkirk for the last jump he dipped and was nearly down on landing. Manteau and Selkirk were clear most of the way, and the former, a Pink Coat four-year-old who has had very little racing, stayed on a shade the better. Manteau is owned by Mr. J. H. T. Duncan, who also races Kotua.

Ring Chief, who had failed twice on the course a fortnight earlier, was always among the first few in the Sedgebrook Juvenile Handicap, and he finished resolutely along the fence to cut down Miss Phaleron,, who had assisted Saint Tor with the pace to the straight. Miss Phaleron, with a change of riders, produced her usual speed: Come True came along the outer from seven or eight places back for third, and Erinscourt, Kevin, Tetratina. Saint Tor. and Nightward were next. Saint Tor stopped badly, and Nightward was always being hard ridden,, without apparently relishing it. '-■']■ A HOPELESS CHASE. Anticipating the starter, B. H. Morris shot Sunny Knight immediately clear from the remote outside marble irf the Landguard Handicap, and it was only a hopeless chase for the others. Miss Wheriko was always second and Ringless was always third, but Courting came along late to take the barren, honour off Salvation and Cheetah. Sal- j vation had the rail draw but was toey and did not move out smartly enough to show her reputed pace. Just after the start Massorah fell and threw her rider, W. J. Mudford, who suffered slight concussion. . Back to a shorter course, Mittie finished too solidly for the favourite, Kotua, in the Brunswick Handicap. She was fourth, outside Counter, over most of the running, but she picked up Kotua in a few strides near the distance. She may be slipping a bit, but she really does look well at present. Counter battled on for third from Endorsement, Dayilia, and the tiring Scandal. Davilia carried her party's money . but was backed too soon. Hagen, feeling the ground, was always last. BEAU CIEL'S PROCESSION. The Harrison Hack Handicap ended in a procession. Beau Ciel, improving with every race, took charge from the start and he always had the others at his complete mercy. The Beau Pere gelding drew one of the wide marbles, but B. H. Morris galvanised into action at the flash of the tapes and his. mount shot clear in a couple of strides. Myarion outclassed the others, with Stella Lux getting up in time to cut out The Monarch. Red Dash showed speed in the middle stages. . Clarion Call fell in some squeezing after going a furlong and Mahaina came down as well.

Surveyor-General had to be good to win the Matarawa Hack Handicap. Under his 9.11 he was forced to go the whole way out on the course from a wide marble, but in the straight he threw out a challenge that gradually overcame the resistance first of Ringling, then of Khurja, catching the latter just short of the post. Khurja appears to have recovered form after his spell. Ringling went her best race for some time. Kingcraft was always too far back. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
