ATTACK ON CONVOY
SURVIVORS LANDED
SIX SHIPS BELIEVED SUNK
NEWS UNCONFIRMED
LONDON, February 14.
More than 100 survivors from ships of the British convoy which was attacked in the Atlantic yesterday were landed today at Funchal, Madeira, according to a Reuter report. -All the survivors were taken to hospital.
The report says that six ships are believed to have been sunk in the attack, but there is still no official news to confirm this.
According to the Madeira „ report, a German surface ship, apparently a .pocket-battleship, shelled the convoy for about half an hour, and her fire, was returned by all the vessels. Survivors from the sunken ships were picked up by other vessels in the convoy.
Such reports should be treated with reserve until official news is available, but they suggest that the German claims are, as usual, greatly exaggerated, for yesterday's German communique said that 13 ships had been sunk, and today the number was put up to 14.
