PROBLEM OF EVACUATION
(Special to tha "Evening Post.")
LEVIN, This Day.
, The Wellington circular in connection with the possible evacuation of women and children from the city in case of earthquake or war emergency was before the Horowhenua County Council this week. The chairman, Mr. G. A. Monk, said that everyone would be anxious to help. The taking of strangers into private homes might present some difficulties as. was found by experience after the Napier earthquake. Provision could best be made by using schools ■ and public halls as hostels. The matter should be referred to the Horowhenua Emergency precautions Committee to take a census of the people willing to accommodate '.'evacuees." The cost would have to be borne by the local bodies. Prompt action was necessary.
The council instructed Mr. Monk, with Councillor Gimblett. and .the engineer and clerk, to deal with the at once, and get in; touch with the-Levin, Shannon, and Otaki Borough Councils in regard to ; ' their part in the matter. -~ •:.. .. •., a ■
