Marshal Petain predicted' iri; a New Year's Eve message that "the year 1941 will be hard." "We will go-hungry," he warned France, "because of poor crops and the war ; blockade." He appealed to peasants to "draw from the earth whatever she can give" and to the "ingehiousness" of the public' to fill out its diet however it can.' He besought workers "not to become discouraged" if "some industries come^to a dead halt" for lack of materials. "The war and the blockade will continue;" Marshal Petainsaid. "That does not" depend on us." Admiral Parian issued a message saying his thoughts *• were with "those who, detained by allies of yesterday, have been and remain faithful to their prostrate country despite lies, offers, and bad treatment, both moral and material."
