IN EVERY HAND

KNITTING MAKES NEWS

WINTER'S STYLES

All over the world the feminine half bf the population in many lands is knitting as it has never done before. Needles long left idle have been set clicking by young and old.. Knitting ,is in .every hand, and it represents the greatest and most sustained war effort of the feminine population of Great Britain, the Dominions, and all Allied countries. It is not surprising, then, that knitting should have become such a habit with the fair sex that they are employing this means.to make their own fashions more serviceable and novel. TRIMMINGS AND- ACCESSORIES. Already we have word that next winter's styles- show a preponderance of .knitted modes not only for whole outfits but as trimmings and accessories too. Nor is the knitting vogue restricted to wool either. We find that silk-floss; chenille, macrame, and even ribbon are to be knitted up to meet fashion's litest demands. With tailbr-inades, stockings and socks of brightly-coloured wool or silky-feeling stranded cotton, may be knitted in plain ribbed or fancy cablestitch patterns with gloves to match. Soiney knee-length socks for sports wear Have embroidered peasant motifs on them, and these are very decorative and young looking for those who have slender underpinnings. SCHIAPARELLI STARTS A CRAZE. Schiaparelli; the Parisian designer now /exploiting her wonderful talent in th,e U.S.A., has. started a new hat craze which again embraces the knitting vogue.> She herself wears one of the klittle stocking caps complete with tasselled end, that is her newest sen-

sation. Hers, in/shades of pink, mauve, and violet knitted in bands alternately, has the tassel made very long so that it reaches to the shoulder,

Suits which incorporate knitting have either sleeves or half of the bodice— either front or back—knitted in wool to contrast with the fabric of the main part of the garment. '.'

PANELS OF WOOL. Designers have found, too, that knitted panels with their resiliency and elasticity, often enable sports and tailored frocks to acquire that flawless

fit usually associated with dresses made

of soft, drapey fabrics. Such a tail\ored frocks is sketched here today. It is of lemon-shaded linen with an inset girdle of matching wool which gives to the frock in wear and in appearance a look of suppleness and grace. With it, to complete the ensemble, is a boxy jacket of moss-stitch knitted "double-knitting" wool.

■ • Sweaters of novelty mediums, such as macrame, chenille, and silk, are evening favourites as well as daytime necessities for wear with summer-in toautumn suits. In their all-purpose capacity they link well with suits, slacks, and glamorous evening skirts or lounge pyjamas. M.R.
