GILBERT AND SULLIVAN SEASON.
The spontaneity and frequency of the applause which was accorded "The Gondoliers" by another large audience at the Opera House last night bore ample testimony to the genuine appeal of this favourite among Gilbert and Sullivan comic operas. Its witty and amusing libretto and its lilting melodies, together with its colourful Venetian setting, combine to provide just the type of diversion that is needed at the present time. The present J. C. Williamson company is a strong one and does,, "The Gondoliers" full justice. The name of,lvan Menzies at the head of the cast as the Duke of Plaza Toro is sufficient guarantee that the production will go with a swing, and there are numerous others in the company who give the popular comedian good support. Evelyn Gardiner, as the Duchess, Viola Wilson, Gregory Stroud, Sara Gregory, Phyllis Curnow, and Vincent McMurray (whose singing of "Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes" evoked warm applause last night) are among those who take a full share in the success of the production. Much credit also vgoes to Mr. Leo Packer and his first-class orchestra. The opera will be repeated tonight and on Monday night, and will be replaced on Tuesday by "The Pirates of Penzance," preceded by "Trial by Jury."
