REPORT
Red Cross activities in Wellingtonslackened slightly over the Christmas and holiday periods but with the New Year the work was picked up and has increased in momentum till all the groups within the Wellington City subcentre are working again at almost full pressure. At the recent sub-centre meeting, at which Mr. C. H. Chapman, M.P., presided, full reports were given.
Interesting points from these reports were: —Over 900 hot drinks were served during the month by the cafeteria to out-patients at the Public Hospital; besides doing war sewing, etc., the ladies" auxiliary continued to visit the Victoria ward and at Christmas put extra comforts into gift parcels; several blind were given wirelesses by the blind committee, which gave other assistance in the form of medicine, groceries, and clothing, etc.; Traffic Inspector Hood is conducting tests in heavy vehicle driving for the women's transport service, members of which continue to drive official visitors to the hospital and to Porirua, and to make themselves available on other occasions; The ladies' social club has formed a sick and wounded help circle, pledging themselves to give an article or donation each month. MEN AND WOMEN V.A.D.s. The Women's V.A.D. reported that 34 members assisted twice a week at the hospital and that 1000 buttonholes, made by twelve members, had been distributed to patients on New Year's morning. There are 115 members Who have completed or are completing the 60 hours of hospital training. The men's V.A.D. is to undergo an A.R.P. course as well as others in first aid and as hospital attendants. Fortyseven members are now serving at home or overseas.
The Junior Red Cross supplied 15 families with Christmas cheer and cover a vast field of service in connection with orphanages, hospitals, refugees, and all patriotic purposes. Schools are visited weekly by lecturers in first aid and home nursing, and public classes in the subjects are to be started this month.
