NOT THOUGHT LIKELY

WAR IN PACIFIC

JAPANESE STATEMENT

(Received February 15, 8 a.m.)

TOKIO, February 14.

The spokesman of the Cabinet information bureau, Mr. Ishii, commenting on the reported warning by the Acting Prime Minister of Australia, Mr. Fadden. of the grave danger of the war spreading to Australia, said: "We do not see the imminence of wai in the Pacific, in which sense-we agree with President Roosevelt's comment a few days ago."

Apparently indicating that Japan does not expect trouble with Australia Mr. Ishii said: "We are sending a very able envoy there." He said that Mr Kawai was expected to leave Japan on February 28.

He declined to comment on the fortifications at Guam and Tutila, asserting "that is a very delicate question."
