FIRE-FIGHTING COURSE

PUBLIC DEMONSTRATION

Hundreds of interested people, including a fair number of women, attended the Central Fire Brigade Station last evening to see the demonstration arranged by the Wellington Fire Board to introduce the course of instruction on fire-fighting under the Emergency Precautions Scheme. Among those present- was Mr. S. S. Dean, chairman of the Fire Board.

Superintendent C. A. Woolley outlined the organisation necessary to cope with an enemy bombing raid or an earthquake, dealing chiefly with the main centres. The' various branches of organisation were incorporated in the E.P.S., administered by section controllers, with the City Ei gineer as chairman. He stressed the need, in cases of emergency for "fire spotters," who could deal with incipient outbreaks, and advise the auxiliary fire service.-if they got beyond their control, and explained the functions of motor-car patrols, emergency fire vans, and the auxiliary fire serv'ce, units of all which paraded and were seen at work.

Mr. A. . McJennett,. the . brigade's fourth officer, gave an outline of the eight projected lectures, which should leave all sections apprised of their duties.

In the subsequent exposition of the sort of fire-fighting which the ordinary citizen could compass, the unit which attracted most attention was the trailer pump of the auxiliary service. The small space in the station yard rather spoilt the effect of the demonstrations of the larger mechanical units, but the display was nevertheless instructive as to the extent which the householder or occupier of business premises could prevent the sprecd of fires from incendiary bombs.
