REPLACING LOSSES

APPEAL FOR AMERICAN AID

MR. CROSS CONFIDENT

LONDON, February 6

At an American Chamber of Commerce luncheon in London today Mr. R. Cross, the Minister of Shipping, appealed for American help in building ships to replace British losses. He said Britain was turning out every ship she, could, but it was difficult to keep pace with the present losses.

In the last war, said Mr. Cross, American ship production was one of the turning points of the struggle, and obviously it could be so again. "There is no country in the world that begins to approach the vast potential capacity of the United States for new shipbuilding," he said. "I look with confidence to the day when we shall know the speed and scale of American shipping assistance. It will then be possible to make practical and businesslike shipping plans "

Mr. Cross recalled a speech, he made a short time ago in which he said he cast'a covetous eye on certain enemy ships in American ports. The song and dance which then emanated from Berlin had for him a high entertainment value, at least because of its bogus quality. He would only say now that those ships were still there; "and I still have an eye," he added.
