BRITISH PAPER

DESIRE OF EXPORTERS

Messrs. Alex Cowan and Sons (N.Z.) Ltd. have received from the paper exporters' section of the London Chamber of Commerce a circular, dated November 12, 1940, stating that at a meeting of the executive committee of the section held on November 5, it was reported that a telegram had been received by a member from a firm in Australia, which read as follows:— "Does Britain desire Australia to increase or decrease her imports of paper from Great Britain?" "It was evident from this telegram," states the circular, "that there was an impression in Australia (and, it is believed, also in New Zealand) that this country may not desire at the moment to export to Australia and New Zealand, and it was thought that this impression might have been, created by inquiries emanating from the Board of Trade as to potential requirements of paper by certain countries over a period. "Members present were unanimously of opinion it should be made quite clear to Australian buyers that there is a strong desire to maintain sales to them, and the following resolution was passed:— That members be asked to make it quite clear to their own organisations in Australia and New Zealand that the maintenance of the export of paper from the United Kingdom to those countries is definitely desired, and that every effort will be made by exporters here to promote such export. "No doubt those members who have branch organisations in the countries* named will be glad to act accordingly." A copy of the circlular has been sent to the Controller of Customs, Wellington.
