MAORI WAR VETERAN
(Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. Major F. W. Garner, a veteran of the Maori war, celebrated his 93rd birthday on Saturday. Except for neuritis in the hands he is still in excellent health. He was present at the attack on Omarunui pa, a few miles from Napier, on the morning November 12, 1866, when rebel Hau Haus were defeated. He also served with Colonel G. S. Whitmore in 1868 and 1869 in Poverty Bay, following up the noted rebel chief Te Kooti. Major Garner claims that he is the sole survivor of the fighting on the East Coast in the sixties.
