HITLER REPLIES TO PETAIN
PESSIMISM IN VICHY
LONDON, January 31,
It is reported that Herr Abetz, Hitler's representative in Paris, has handed over to the Vichy Government Hitler's reply to the message sent to him on December 25 by Marshal Petain. The reply is said to be very brief, and is also said to have created a very pessimistic atmosphere at Vichy. The possibility that Germany may occupy the whole of France is again being discussed. In neutral circles' it is pointed out that the reason which has prevented it so far still remains valid.
General Weygand is going td broadcast to all French Africa from Algiers, tomorrow evening. General Weygand is in command of those territories which have not declared for General de Gaulle.
