BUSINESS IMPROVES

"Evening Post," February 1. Most sections of the market showed improvement this' week on business done when the Exchanges resumed. Government Loans showed, signs of easing in price, but War Loan is in good demand. Bank and insurance shares kept steady. New Zealand . industrial shares were firm for leading lines. Australian investments had a fair turnover. Approximate prices for New Zealand Stocks this time last year and for last week and this week were as' follows: —

•Buyers. tSellers. Interest is due. on 4 p.c. (1946) on February 5 and on 4 p.c. (1940-43) on March 15. Sales of Government Stocks as reported this week were as follows:— ; War Loan, £81 7s 6d, £81 ss; 3£ per cent. (1954-56), £100 r ss; 3£ per cent .(1957), £100 ss; 4 per cent. (1940----43), £101 17s 6d; 4 per cent. (1943-46), £103 15s, £103 12s 6d; 4 per cent: (1946-49), £103 15s;-4 per cent. (1948), £103 10s; 4 per cent. (1949-52), £104 10s; 4:per cent. (1952-55), £104 10s. Sales of 3J State Advances (1944) were at £99. Company debentures in the sales were 5 per cent. Auckland Gas (perpetual), £99 and (1949) £101. 4£ per cent. N.Z. Refrigerating (1940----45), £102 10s, and in the unofficial list there were sales of 4£ per cent. John Fuller (1949) at £60. NEW ZEALAND SHARES.
