PUBLIC LIBRARIES
BOOKS OF THE WEEK The City Librarian has chosen "Jane Fairfax,"; by, Naomi .Boyde-Smith, as the book of the week, and-has furnished the following review:— ' "Jane Fairfax" is a successful experiment, but it might very easily have been a failure. Miss Roy de-Smith has taken Jane Fairfax put of Jane Austen's. "Emma," .and has tried to treat her as a subject with more sympathy than Miss Austen felt she could with propriety afford. Miss Royde-Smith borrows characters from other novelists of the period, and shows how circumstances led - the governess into the career of deceit which Miss Royde» Smith feels that Jane Austen found it impossible to condone. : Those Austenlovers who feel that this experiment is sacrilegious may well be very pleasantly surprised. ... : ' ': ,\ , Other .titles selected from recent accession lists are. as follows: —General: "My Father Was a Gentleman," by R. Holmes; "Menacing Sun," by M. Gardner; "Norway—Changing and Changeless," by A. E. Rothery. Fiction: '"Winter is Past* by N. Streatfield; "Black Plumes," by M. Ailingham; "Stars *on the Sea," by F. and W. Mason. ' ' ■■_..■'. "', .
