MILITARY SERVICE
GROUNDS FOR APPEAL
"NO SYMPATHY WITH GOVERNMENT"
Appealing against military service before the Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday afternoon, a man who olfered to serve in the Mercantile Marine said that he was opposed to combatant service for conscientious and political reasons. His political reason; jwas that he had no sympathy with the Government. -. The appellant, xßpnald Parks, said he "was unemployed and during twenty years of .working life he had never held a job for more than a year because he suffered from neurasthenia' The conscientious ground for the appeal was the law of God which said, "Thou shalt not kill." He would not fight to defend himself. The appeal was dismissed. Patrick Gordon Little, a labourer, said that he had been called for Territorial service and had completed his training, but had conscientious objections to serving overseas. The. fact that he had no objection to military service in New , Zealand must embarrass his appeal,- the chairman, Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., said. "Then we had better wipe it out," Little said. The appeal was withdrawn by.consent. Rangi Norman Jackson, a motorbody builder, said he had applied for a position in the Air Force as a rigger, but wished to go on with his appeal,, because he sincerely objected to fighting" overseas. That did not mean that he, would not resist an invader as that would be killing in self-defence. He declared himself ready to help win the war provided he was not asked to kUI. The appeal was dismissed. The appeal of Philip James Edwin Boulden, who stated that he was conscientiously opposed to fighting, was struck out because he wrote stating that he was entering the Air Force as a flight rigger.
