CANTEEN PROFITS

MORE DISTRIBUTED

TOTAL TO DATE £16,230

The Hon. F. Jones, chairman of the Canteen Board, announced today that recently £3250 was distributed to the various fighting forces from profits made by the board in the various canteens. This now brings the total distribution to date to £16,230, of which £12,550 has been .distributed to the Army,. £3150 to. the Air Force, and £530 to the Navy. These sums have been handed over to the headquarters of each of the fighting services which in turn distribute them to the camps and units of the forces.

"The board has been established since November, 1939," said Mr. Jones, "and how controls canteen services in 23 defence establishments in New Zealand and.has also a canteen on board H.M.S. Monowai.

"The facilities provided in these camps include dry and wet* canteens, cafeterias, milk bars, cinemas,1 hairdressing saloons, photography, laundry, dry cleaning, and other amenities. All kinds of goods for which there is a regular demand are on sale in the canteens, and a low scale of selling prices, comparable with those obtaining in chain stores, has been fixed, while for certain popular lines in general demand by soldiers-special low prices have been arranged.

"As indicated above, profits from trading are periodically distributed to the various forces and are used for the purpose of providing the men in camps with sports gear and other social benefits. '.v

"Canteen services provide a convenient method of servicing the U\ . c with high quality goods at the lowest prices; moreover, all profits from canteens are used entirely for the benefit of the men."
