NOT MINIMISED
LOSS OF SOUTHAMPTON
OPINION IN LONDON
ITALY'S PROBLEMS
(British Official Wireless.)
(Received January 18, 9.30 a.m.)] RUGBY, January 17.
There is no disposition in informed naval circles to minimise the enemy's success in the Mediterranean which made necessary the sinking by British forces of the cruiser Southampton. In essentials, however, the situation in the Mediterranean remains unchanged.
In particular the Italian difficulties regarding the navigation in the Mediterranean remain as acute as ever. Italy's communications with Libya are extremely perilous, as was shbwn by yesterday's announcement of the sinking of two Italian supply ships.
The naval correspondent -of "The Times" expresses the view that the. loss by Marshal Graziani of two whole shipments 6f mechanised equipment may well have an important effect on General Wavell's operations in North Africa. On the other hand, as announced by the Admiralty, the convoy which was carrying military supplies to Greece reached its destination.
