SECTION PLAY ENDS

THE BOWLING FOURS

FORTY-FOUR TEAMS GO ON

FOUR LOCAL CLUBS

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)

CHRISTCHURCH, January 16. At the end of the fourth day;s play iii the New Zealand fours bowls championship, 44 teams secured the necessary six wins or more to put them into post-section play, in which each ; of them starts off afresh with two lives;

The weather today was fine and, though a few of the greens were holding slightly, most of them were running faster than they have been since the commencement of the tournament. A fairly strong easterly wind made conditions tricky on any green that was at-all exposed. . •

High scores- were recorded in many instances, chief among .them being the win of W. F.Had win (Hutt) from E. A. Smith (Edgeware), 46-5. Other high scores were:— "' ' ' ' ,

.G. W. Samms (Woolton),; 38-12,: against, E. A.. Johnson (Leeston).

S. a K. Smith. (Nor,th :End, Invercargill), 34-13, against W. Brown (United). ;

J.JM. Giles, 34r16, against-W. D. Bennett (Hastings). . ...-....= Many teams, starting the day with only four wins.to their credit, fought desperately to get. the required six, but. there, was , the: usual .crop of surprises. . W.i J., Crawford (Otago), was. the only one to beat C. Spearman (R.S.A., Christchurch), the score: being, 22-21, and both finished up with seven wins and one loss, : , \ /;.;

J. Veitch (Dunedin) only just made his games, winning the first but losing the second, 39-28, to W. D. Ramsay (Shirley). . One of the surprises was the failure of W.-Anderson (Dunedin) to qualify. He had five wins up.to this morning, but lost to A. Clark (Barrington), 29----14, and W. Buist (Oamaru), 25-15.

The greens chosen for post-section play are all in excellent order and some first-class bowling Is expected.
