ALERTS IN LONDON

MIDLAND TOWNS BOMBED

LONDON, January 16.

The first alert in London for 72 hours sounded late/ last night and the all clear came within three hours.

One incendiary bomb fell on a church which was set on fire in a previous raid, but watchers nearby quickly smothered the flames. Another incendiary bomb set fire to a newspaper office but the flames were soon subdued.

A second alert sounded within an hour, but it did not last long. Some bombs were dropped.

Liverpool and towns in the East Midlands, West Midlands, and East Anglia were also visited.

Eight bombs fell in a populous area of a south-east coast town, wrecking a number of houses and shops. A church, was also hit.

A raid on a town in the East Midlands lasted for several hours. Two houses in one street were demolished but the occupants had gone to shelter. One bomber is known to have been destroyed. The Air Ministry reports that the casualties outside London last night were few. and occurred for the most part when several houses were demolished at one point in the Midlands.

The casualties in London also were not heavy, and were mostly due to a bomb which demolished a building occupied by a number of persons. The damage done throughout the country was not extensive.
