LARGE CROWD SEES NOTABLE CUP

DECLINE IN TURNOVER NOT A TRUE RETURN

(By "Rangatira.")

Trentham was at its best for the opening day of the Wellington Racing Club's Summer Meeting yesterday. A decline was shown in the investments, despite large fields and a splendid attendance, but the drop was more apparent than real, as last year was Exhibition year, and the increase over two years ago, a much truer line, was substantial.

The feature of the day was the outstanding performance of Kindergarten in winning the Wellington Cup. Another effort of exceptional merit was Sir Beau's victory in the Telegraph Handicap. These two three-year-olds thus won the Cup Day double for the favourites for the first time on record at Trentham. They were, however, the only favourites or near favourites who obliged during the day.
